The IARS recognises that since its inauguration the number of healthcare professionals, other than hospital based respiratory scientists, performing spirometry testing has increased dramatically. This increase is due largely to a global awareness of spirometry as an essential tool for assessing and monitoring respiratory disease, in particular the assessment of asthma and the early detection of COPD.
The IARS in conjunction with the Dublin Institute of Technology have established the CPD Certificate in Spirometry for Healthcare Professionals to assess the competence of practitioners to perform spirometry measurements. The aim of the programme is to equip qualified healthcare professionals with the technical, practical and clinical skills required to perform spirometry testing to a high standard. The certificate will be awarded by the Dublin Institute of Technology as a level 7 supplementary award with 15 ECTS credits. Certification will be valid for two years.
The IARS recommends certification to all practitioners of spirometry that provide quality spirometry data. This is a part time programme extending over approximately 6 months; however participants will be expected to complete the programme within a maximum of 12 months. Throughout all stages of the programme students will undertake self-study; IARS Respiratory Scientists will provide additional support and mentoring as required. The programme consists of two modules.
Module 1 Introduction to Spirometry is a 1 day training course run by the IARS. Course content is available here. IARS Certificate of Attendance will awarded.
Module 2 Spirometry Practice forms the basis of the certificate with a strong emphasis on self study. This module is divided into four separate but equally important elements.
Element 1: Written assignment Element 2: Submission of a learning log Element 3: Written Examination
Element 4: Practical examination
Module details may be viewed here. Progression through the module is dependent on successful completion of each element.
CPD Certificate in Spirometry for Healthcare Professionals will be awarded by DIT to successful candidates. Further details of each element available here. Certification and recertification are also available to individuals who have previously undertaken an approved spirometry training course. Assessment of prior learning will be undertaken on a case by case basis by IARS and DIT to grant advanced entry to module 2. You may register here.
