Spirometry Course

I.A.R.S. Spirometry Training

The IARS recognise that since its inauguration the number of healthcare professionals, other than hospital based respiratory physiologists performing spirometry, testing has increased dramatically. This increase is due largely to a global awareness of spirometry as an essential tool for assessing and monitoring respiratory disease, in particular the assessment of asthma and the early detection of COPD. The IARS, in partnership with Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), introduced an accredited spirometry training course in 2010 to meet the needs of healthcare professionals (nurses, physiotherapists and doctors) utilising spirometry testing during the course of their practice. The aim of this programme is to equip qualified healthcare professionals with the technical, practical and clinical skills to perform spirometry testing to a high standard. It is a level 7 programme fully accredited by DIT and carries an award of 15 ECTS credits leading to the award of CPD Certificate in Spirometry for Healthcare Professionals. This programme is also recognised by the European Respiratory Society and graduates are awarded the ESDL (European Spirometry Driving Licence) upon successful completion of the programme:

The CPD Certificate in Spirometry for Healthcare Professionals is divided into 2 modules.

Module 1 is a One Day Introduction to Spirometry and is a basic introduction to spirometry.

It is aimed at those who have no knowledge or skill of spirometry testing. It is a foundation course covering theory and practical knowledge of calibration, spirometry performance, infection control and interpretation. Module 1 may be undertaken as a stand-alone module for those who want to gain some knowledge of spirometry but who do not intend to perform spirometry in their practice. A certificate of attendance is only awarded for this module.

Module 2 is predominately a self-directed process of learning whereby the candidate completes a learning book of spirometry tests, related tasks and assignments relating to spirometry performance and interpretation. The final part of the Module consists of a 40 minute MCQ and a practical exam where the candidate is assessed performing spirometry on a volunteer subject according to the ERS / ATS 2005 Spirometry testing guidelines. An IARS mentor is available during this self-directed process to ensure that candidates emerge confident and competent in the practice of good quality spirometry. Module 2 is generally undertaken by candidates who have completed Module 1. It is expected that all parts of Module 2 are completed within 12 months. The IARS STRONGLY recommend that both modules are undertaken to ensure performance of high quality spirometry testing.

    Module 2 Application/Registration Form

Recertification Module, it is a requirement of the CPD Certificate for Spirometry for Healthcare Professionals Programme that recertification takes place after three years. Certified individuals are expected to review their own performance critically in order to sure that they are continuing to perform to the required standard on an on-going basis and to formally demonstrate their continued competence on a three yearly basis.

Recertification of competency for the performance of spirometry testing will involve the submission of a Learning log that is a modified version of the Module 2 one. The Learning log will be evaluated and if deemed complete recertification will be awarded. If not complete the candidate may be required to attend for a practical assessment and/or resubmit the Learning log with updated information.

A formal request to register for the Recertification module will be sent in January of the year you are due to recertify. A period of 4 months will be given to complete the learning log. Recertification will be completed by October of each year to maintain consistency over time. Currently fees are €85
